Why Are Chokers Everywhere Again?

Revisiting 2016’s most controversial accessory — this time, styled the polished way.

Earlier this year, Mardi Gras wrapped up, and as someone who goes to college in New Orleans, it was a big deal. While the locals keep it relatively lowkey, my school treats the holiday like Fashion Week with beads.

For some, Mardi Gras is all rave-core: metallic bikinis, platform boots, and glitter-drenched everything. For others, the holiday is an excuse to experiment with some of the most obscure fashion trends that we wouldn’t be wearing on any typical Tuesday.

While I wasn’t shocked by the fringe looks or the plethora of lace tights, there were a handful of trends that had me thinking, wait…is this really back? And suddenly, it clicked: we’re dressing like it’s 2016 again.

And while 2016 had plenty of questionable fashion moments, the one my school collectively chose to revive? The choker. Everywhere I turned, girls were wearing either velvet chokers or the infamous black tattoo ones–the classic 2016.

I’m not sure who sent out the memo, but chokers were clearly this year’s agreed-upon accessory. And, while I’m definitely skeptical, I’m surprisingly on board.

Chokers are once again accentuating our necklines, and, while you won’t find me in a plastic stretch collar anytime soon, I can appreciate that this revival comes with a much more refined spin.

Instead, I’m gravitating toward the jewelry-coded versions — think delicate gold chokers that sit softly at the collarbone, sculptural chain styles that feel intentional rather than nostalgic, and even wrap chokers that tie loosely for a more effortless finish. Rather than leaning fully into the Tumblr-era revival, I’d style the trend in a way that feels more elevated this time around. If chokers are sticking around, I’m choosing to wear them polished — not plastic.
