Tate McRae Takes Listeners For A Ride In New Single, Sports Car

Got a sports car?

POSTED BY ASHLEY COLEMAN

Tate McRae has it all— the sound, the look, the stage presence. And now, she’s putting it all on display in her latest release.

On Jan. 24, the Canadian pop star gifted listeners a brand new song, “Sports Car,” co-written by Julia Michaels, Grant Tedder, and Ryan Tedder. She teased the single back during a Jingle Ball performance in December of 2024. And now, it serves as a taste of what McRae has to offer with her upcoming studio album So Close to What. She is no stranger to success, and neither is this release.

Sonically, “Sports Car” taps into an early 2000s sound popularized by highly acclaimed producer Timbaland and pop icons like Britney Spears and The Pussycat Dolls. Its sultry melody and seductive lyrics may surprise some listeners, especially during the chorus when McRae whispers lyrics like “You can do it on your own while you’re looking at me” and “But you got a sports car, we can uh-uh in it.”

The track also comes with its own music video, which is just as riveting to watch as it is to listen to. In the video, viewers see shots of McRae dancing in several different rooms and wearing various high-fashion outfits as an ominous figure watches from the outside (which is later revealed to be none other than herself reflecting on the woman she is becoming).

Enjoyers of this single (or any of McRae’s other music) can look forward to the release of her third album, So Close to What, on Feb 21. And if you want to hear it live, the “Greedy” singer will soon embark on her first-ever arena tour, the Miss Progressive Tour, which begins March 18.

Until then, enjoy everything McRae has to offer in “Sports Car,” available to stream now across all platforms.
