Bold cuts and colors, opulent prints, a smart mix of materials and handmade designs are what the New York based brand -cide is all about. It is making statements and creating confidence while blessing its customers with an overall un-fuck-with-able look. We talked to designer Dashawn Mckenzie, aka Kenzo, about his vision, sources of inspiration and the role fatherhood plays in his job as a designer. Setting an example for young creatives out there, he’s ready to show us how far quality and confidence can take you. And let us tell you, Kenzo is far from stopping now.

What is -cide all about? Shortly describe your brand’s DNA.

-Cide is about standing and making a statement without trying too hard or saying too much.

What inspired your latest collection? Talk us through your creative process.

I always think about the future when creating and designing. I am highly inspired by the 80's, 90's and 2000s.

As a New York based brand, does the city have any influence on your brand’s philosophy?

Greatly! I spend a lot of time at Penn station Amtrak and 42 bus terminal in Manhattan, so I’m constantly inspired by the commuters.

You are a designer, but first and foremost you’re a father and a husband, how does your family influence your work?

They are my judges and balance. My daughter is 3 years old and she'll let me know if something is "fire" or not haha. She's brutally honest and has a sense of style, so I listen. My wife is a stylist @ixoshanice, so getting a women's perspective on all of my designs is always a plus. My son is 2 month and for now, he just watches me.

How does -cide stand out as a streetwear brand?

-Cide stands out on its own. It’s a fairly new brand, but we conduct ourselves as if we were in the business for 20+ years.

Which part does sustainability play at -cide?

The majority of our designs are hand made in NYC, so we pay the price for sustainability. It's something we've always believed in and it's a foundation for us.

In your own opinion, what skills are necessary to be a good designer?

You have to have an eye for it as well as a passion to innovate and create.

What’s your vision for -cide’s future?

We are going to be one of the best brands in the entire world.

We cannot wait to see -cide overtaking the world with hard work, passion and dope designs. Check out -cide’s latest collection and cop your faves at cide.us.com.
