It’s that time of year when the juniors are receiving their summer internship offers. Congrats!

But if you’re like me and aren’t working in the ultra-formal business realm, you might be a little lost on what to wear. Are we still wearing slacks? What is business casual?

The good news is that the creative industries (fashion and PR agencies, magazines, etc.) offer flexibility in our internship dress code. We can dress without losing our style and make office wear truly our own.

The perfect, creative office fit is all about balance. Whether you’re pairing formal black pants with a crisp white tee and layered jewelry or business shorts with a nicer top, we can all agree to take it one step down from formal business.

Make sure you’re reading your work environment, but if it allows, casual, business-casual can be your new go-to.

Keep it appropriate with modest silhouettes, but, for the summer heat, thinner fabrics are entirely acceptable (so long as they’re not see-through). Pairing outfits with classic flats and loafers instead of sneakers can bring your outfits from street to office-worthy.

Our outfits should signal taste, but they should also outline our awareness. We want to avoid being too corporate, while also avoiding being too casual that it’s inappropriate.
