The "Weird Girl" Essential Holding My Fall Wardrobe Together

One element of the weird girl aesthetic that has earned a permanent spot in my wardrobe is tights. And no, I'm not talking about basic black or sheer nude tights — I mean vibrant, bold colours like bright red, blue, pink, yellow, and purple, and eye-catching patterns like polka dots, stripes, and animal prints.

I absolutely loved colored tights when I was younger, but as I grew older, I stopped wearing them. I wasn't seeing adults or other people my age wearing them, so I assumed they made me look childish rather than cool.  However, about a few years ago, I started seeing the rise of the weird girl aesthetic, which included colored and patterned tights, and it gave me the push to start wearing them again.

Then, when I finally watched Me Before You two years ago, it sealed the deal. One of the main reasons I fell in love with the movie was Louisa Clark’s wardrobe—especially her iconic black-and-yellow bumblebee tights. Seeing her wear bold tights with so much confidence was the ultimate validation to bring them back into my wardrobe.

Now, they are my favorite piece for fall. Layering them under miniskirts, shorts, and mini dresses adds warmth and flair to any outfit. On bolder days, I wear them with neutral outfits for a pop of color or texture. On quieter days, I pair them with outfits that match them in some way, whether in color or pattern.
