The ICONIC debut single and music video for ‘Wannabe’ by the Spice Girls was released exactly 25 years ago this November. The 1996 dance-pop song became an immediate hit with fans, making Spice the girl group’s most known album, with over 31 million copies sold worldwide.

To this day, the lyrics of the song resonate with many female listeners due to its empowering message. ‘Wannabe’ is viewed as a symbol of female friendship and it has been claimed as a feminist anthem encouraging women to actively demand what they ‘really, really want’, in a patriarchal world which forces them into passivity and denies them of basic human rights. The song even influenced campaigns like Project Everyone’s #WhatIReallyReallyWant, which featured female performers from different countries dancing to its lyrics while highlighting women’s inequality.

This year, in celebration of their 25th anniversary, the Spice Girls released a limited-edition EP titled ‘Wannabe25’. Additionally, on October 29th, the girl group also shared a new video for their single ‘Wannabe’, which was filmed inside the same hotel used for the original ‘Wannabe’ video.
