Williams first suffered the injury during Wimbledon, back in June, when the she was forced to retire against Aliaksandra Sasnovich.
The 39-year-old won her first Grand Slam title in Flushing Meadows in 1999, at the tender age of 17. However, she hasn’t won a major title since the Australian Open in 2017, having failed to win a set in her last four Grand Slam Finals.
