As we mourn the summer that never really started (what’s good 2020), one thing we are excited about is launching into autumn with Oxfam’s sustainable fashion initiative #SecondHandSeptember. A pledge to only shop second hand for the thirty days in the month.

Last year famous fashionistas Vivienne Westwood and Rachel Weisz pledged to join the campaign in its debut run. This year UK woman of the moment Michaela Coel (best known for ‘I may destroy you’ and ‘chewing gum’)  is fronting the campaign, stating: ‘Small changes can have a huge impact on the environment – and, in turn, the fight against poverty’.

September is the perfect time for this challenge to be actioned. As we enter what would usually be a new fashion season of wardrobe essentials; think scarves, faux fur, and layers - instead, this campaign encourages that we turn our attention to what we already have, or what we can find in second-hand stores.

To give the shopaholics among us a little helping hand in shopping second hand we’ve rounded up a few of our favorite thrifty second-hand clothes stores around the United Kingdom, the home place of the campaign, for you to check out this month…

@oxfamonlineshop

Of course, Oxfam is first on our list. You can shop their online collections here, or visit one of their over five-hundred charity shops across the United Kingdom. Find your nearest one by entering your postcode on the website.

@sheltershops

Another charity shop we love is Shelter. In London you can now visit one of their incredible new ‘Boutique’ stores for a unique shopping experience in a space designed by HemingwayDesign, only selling the crème-de-la-crème of hand-picked second-hand clothing. Find a Shelter Boutique or up to 100 more Shelter Charity shops here.

@wearecow

And for one-of-a-kind, re-worked pieces and selected original vintage buys shop online at We Are Cow here, or visit their stores in Manchester, Birmingham, and more. They are sure to provide an (old) new fit that will make you stand out from the crowd.

@depop

Lastly, we have to mention our beloved Depop. One-stop-online-shop for all second-hand fashion. If you aren’t already on the Depop app then you can create an account for free here and start your second-hand shopping spree.

It is Oxfam’s hope that this month of up-cycling, thrifting, and falling back in love with the clothes already in your wardrobes will become a campaign as big in the calendar year as Movember and Dry-January. Every pledge made helps in healing the planet and creating a more sustainable fashion model, as well as beating poverty by ensuring some of the poorest people on the planet can be paid a fair living wage.

Oxfam, you have our pledge! If you want to join us and thousands of others in this month of slow fashion sign up here and share your pledge with the hashtag #SecondHandSeptember.
