It may still be summer, but there’s no doubt that we’re clinging onto those hazy evenings and blue skies for dear life. Before we know it, we’ll be snuggled up in front of the fire, it’ll be dark at 5 pm, and we’ll be on the countdown to Christmas. With a new season approaching, what better time to embrace some seasonal switch-ups and invest in some essentials for your autumn wardrobe? Here’s a guide to what to add to your basket in the weeks to come.

Serious sleeve action

If there’s one way to add an instant boost to a classic autumn capsule wardrobe for 2020, it’s embracing the big, bold sleeve. Balloon sleeves are huge this autumn/winter, and there’s an incredible selection of pieces available for casual and smart wear. Oversized sleeves complement all frames, and they can help to draw attention to the top half if you’re conscious of your bottom half. You can wear a statement sleeve with jeans and pumps or cool maxi or midi skirts for an effortless daytime look, or opt for an eye-catching blouse to turn heads for a night out. If you’re going big on the sleeves, keep your accessories understated. If there’s a chill in the air, add a blazer or throw a cape, shawl, cardi or jacket around your shoulders.

Golden girls

Gold is the colour of the season this autumn. While some people may associate gold with Christmas parties and decadent balls, there are several ways to introduce this beautiful metallic shade into your autumn wardrobe. Look for muted tones and use accessories for understated glam or embrace the opportunity to go all-out with a show-stopping gown if you have a gathering planned or you’re celebrating a special occasion. Gold works brilliantly with black, and it doesn’t have to be garish. You can choose simple touches like gold hair accessories, metallic bags or a chic cami or pleated skirt, or make a statement with a bright pair of boots or metallic trainers to create outfits for all occasions.

Cardis are cool

Cardigans seem to swing from granny staple to piece du jour, and this is one of the attractions of wearing cardis. The cardigan is such a versatile piece, and you can channel almost any style or theme. In the autumn, when the weather is unpredictable, and it may not be chilly enough to break out the new coat, cardigans are a great option. You can chuck on an oversized style with a dress, a skirt or a pair of mom jeans for laid-back daytime outfits or dress up a more fitted style with a belt or a collar necklace to complement a pencil skirt or tailored cigarette pants with heels.

Checkmate

favourite-outfits-of-the-week">Checks are a perennial high-filer in the autumn fashion stakes, and they’re back again for 2020. This season, the catwalks and shop windows are filled with an array of prints and patterns, including tartans, gingham and houndstooth. You can be as bold as you like with checks. For the audacious among us, clashing checks is a must. For those taking a slightly more subtle approach, a statement coat, mini skirt or blazer will be a great investment.

Summer is drawing to an end, and it’s time to dust off the jumpers, boots and coats and look forward to cosy nights in and brisk walks through piles of gold and terracotta leaves. With the new season fast approaching, don’t forget to add these essentials to your wardrobe.
