SEAN SUEN’s FW21 Takes A Look At The Abnormal

Rising designer SEAN SUEN debuted their fall/winter 2021 collection in Shanghai. 

The collection entitled The Mediocre Monster- Abnormal Version Part II, explores the juxtaposition between what is considered normal and abnormal, popular and unpopular. The designer used materials that they perceived to represent the ‘sicknesses’ of this era and conveys a disordered nature. 

The pieces released are heavily textured, with patented leather and excessive feathering being the more obtuse fabrics. The designer appeared to opt for a streamline physique in terms of the shape of the clothing yet keeping them oversized. Therefore, creating a sense of neatness that contrasts with the use of ‘abnormal’ materials.

Trench coats and blazers are reoccurring throughout the collection. The designer toys with the traditional item using materials such as denim to convey their versatility. It is important to note that SEAN SUEN is predominantly focused on menswear, yet an inclusion of female models in the Shanghai show expresses the fluidity of gender within the brand and the incorporation of femininity in the sphere of masculinity.
