The High-Gloss Pop World of Sam Quealy

Inside her JAWBREAKER era of bold sound, visuals, and movement.

The singer, songwriter, dancer, and performance artist Sam Quealy is known for her wild tracks and magnetic, almost otherworldly aura. The Paris-based, dynamic artist showcases her many talents in her highly-anticipated sophomore album JAWBREAKER. A creative acrobat of sorts, Quealy has always thrived across disciplines, but on her latest album, those elements finally lock into place, forming a fully realized work that spans sound, image, and movement.

Sonically, JAWBREAKER is a candy-coated rush of synth-pop, electro-pop, Eurodance, and disco, pushing the boundaries of each genre she dips into. Where her debut Blonde Venus reveled in volatile, underground techno-pop, JAWBREAKER, with abundant use of live instrumentation, lends a new luminosity to her sound. It’s no wonder that her social and collaborative orbit includes artistic powerhouses like Rick Owens, La Femme, and Yelle – Quealy understands spectacle, but never lets it overshadow the substance of her work.

"Londontown” Single Art

The singles map out the album’s emotional and aesthetic range. Lead track “Londontown” is a synth-filled heartache, capturing the bittersweet romance of chasing something – or someone – through time and memory. The video perfectly embodies the push and pull of the track, as Sam and her dancers deliver a performance so infectious, you'll be itching to join in and dance your heart out. “Love Lasso” dives into even deeper territory. Hypnotic and high drama, the track inhabits an ominous romanticism which traces the remnants of a toxic, yet addicting, love that you can’t quite escape. “By My Side” featuring Marlon Magnée (from the band La Femme) flips the mood entirely, a charming disco daydream and love story driven by Quealy and Magnée’s exquisite chemistry. And then there’s the 80s-inspired “Girl’s Night,” a synthy cool-girl track that journeys through the brilliant chaos of a night out, making you want to call up the girls for some unbridled fun.

Quealy’s exquisite visuals are on display in each video, whether it’s surreal showdowns with male bodybuilders, partying in abandoned London warehouses, embarking on a crazed night out with the girls, or frolicking in a vintage recording studio - her videos are instantly iconic, driven by frenetic yet precise choreography and creative direction.

JAWBREAKER is bold, glossy, and fearless, balancing high drama with sheer joy. Sam Quealy isn’t just pushing pop forwards - she’s reshaping it in her own image.
