Saint Laurent Skips Paris Fashion Week Due To COVID-19

The haute couture label won’t be presenting any designs for the entire year

It seems COVID-19 really isn’t taking any prisoners, as if it wasn’t bad enough already with thousands of lives lost and the world in lockdown, it’s affecting all of the little things we enjoy in our lives.

Everyone has lost in some way to the pandemic, those of us fortunate enough to still be here today and with all of our loved ones have felt the effects in other ways. No more going to work with our friends, no more meals out or drinks, no more concerts or festivals, holidays and sporting events and now - no more Saint Laurent at Paris Fashion Week!

For the fashion folk amongst us, this is a huge sadness, one of the world's most famous labels has decided to skip the event for the entire year, however, their reasons are just. In a statement the brand says“... Conscious of the current circumstance and its waves of radical change, Saint Laurent has decided to take control of its pace and reshape its schedule... Saint Laurent will not present its collections in any of the pre-set schedules of 2020.”

In an interesting additional comment, Saint Laurent’s Creative Director Anthony Vaccarello has discussed the reasons behind this decision, the first of its kind for fashion weeks this year. Vaccarello claims it comes from a desire to break out of traditional fashion regimes and schedules and that the current situation has opened their eyes.

“Slowing down and living in the moment reveals all the vulnerabilities of an imprisoned organization.” He says that what they believe is actually out of fashion right now is the presentation of fashion itself, the shows, the showrooms, and even the orders.

The brands CEO has reassured us however they aren’t skipping shows altogether and that this has nothing to do with “cutting costs”, will more brands follow suit and decide that showcasing fashion is actually not in fashion?
