Move Over Cottage Core, Romanticism and Renaissance Have Arrived
Main Character Energy Incoming.
In previous years Cottage Core has dominated the airy and feminine styles of Spring. This year we are tapping into inspiration from the Romanticism period and the Renaissance period. Don’t worry. These styles lend themselves effortlessly to the ‘frolic through the field’ vibe of Spring dressing. The aesthetics are similar, but let's break down their origins:
Romanticism
Romanticism is all about drama...Gasp! The period saw fashion take inspiration from previous centuries and intertwine these styles together. The unwritten rule was more is more. This Spring, flouncy silhouettes and gothic embellishments are bringing back a romantic revival. Bows, gloves, and ribbons are not to be slept on. Lace and billowing sleeves will give you your main character moment and give you a taste of the romantic era...spoiler alert, it’s delicious.
Renaissance
The Renaissance period took place from the 14th-17th century in Europe and was seen as a cultural ‘rebirth.’ The period was heavily defined by literature, art, and philosophy –which can lend as inspiration for recreating the looks of the time. The styles were elegant, feminine, and extravagant. Today, renaissance fashion is more subtly downplayed for everyday looks. Corsets and embroidery capture the style of the time while portraying modern trends. Floaty gowns act as less restrictive garments which still seize the delicacy and femininity of women’s fashion during the Renaissance.
