The U.S undermining a measure aimed to help promote breastfeeding.

Politics and boobs are two things you’d expect to exist exclusive of each other. That was until the recent events at the United Nations-affiliated Work Health Assembly.

A resolution that aimed to encourage breastfeeding was expected to pass with little trouble or interference. However, the United States attempted to obstruct the deliberations.

The main objection of the resolution was to promote breastfeeding. It was a multi-faceted plan, and one of the strategies was to limit inaccurate advertising of breastmilk substitutes – this is a longstanding strategy and accepted universally by health organisations.

By attempting to block this resolution, the U.S has shown a clear commitment to corporations and a total disregard for the well-being of children. It comes as little surprise with the U.S's longstanding history of pay-to-play politics.

What is a surprise is the blatant showcase of support. The new embolden conservative political playground means corrupt dealings no longer take place in the shadows. The U.S's tactic to undermine this resolution was bold – directly threating Ecuador (the country that introduced the measure) with economic punishment. And after the recent trade war started by the U.S, they've shown they have bark and bite. Ecuador ultimately dropped the resolution.

After numerous attempts to revive, an unlikely hero reintroduced the measure – Russia. Met without threats the resolution was accepted with most of the original wording.

If the U.S was successful, the effects could have been devastating. A 2016 study found that breastfeeding would prevent almost one million child deaths every year. And save the global community $300 billion in health care costs and economic betterment.

Of course there are concessions made for women who are unable to breastfeed. This issue comes down to choosing health over corporate interests. Because, as always, it's the most vulnerable who are affected – children.
