Wear Your Clothes - Don't Let Them Wear You
Your relationship with fashion is about to change.
Your relationship with fashion is about to change. Everyone, no matter where they fall on the fashion spectrum, likes to feel good in their clothes. The fabric that we adorn is multipurpose: it can make a statement, accentuate the features we want to show off, or it can simply be practical, streamlining our lives to perhaps avoid even being conscious of what we’re wearing.
But too often we worry about doing justice to the clothes we wear, as if we’re somehow inferior to something that is supposed to uplift us. Why not flip the narrative and embrace a new mindset? Repeat after me: These clothes are lucky to be on my body. And again, these clothes are LUCKY to be on MY body! Here are a few tips to enhance your confidence - it's time to wear the hell out of your clothes.
Firstly...
Your body is beautiful because it’s human
Have you ever stopped what you’re doing to take a breath and just be in your body? Just to exist, and feel and think about everything we have the physical capacity to do? You might be surprised by the results. We are inherently beautiful because we’re breathing, and what are the chances of any one of us existing and breathing and able to wear amazing clothes? Pretty cool, right?!
Trends shouldn’t be forced
Trends are all well and good, but it’s not a one-size-fits-all business (pardon the pun). Everyone is different so some trends might feel inauthentic to you, and finding something that works can unlock a new level of confidence you never knew you had; it’s all about trial and error.
Your body type is your friend
There is no one body type that fashion favours. Every shape lends itself to a particular style, and determining yours could be the key to truly owning your outfits. For example, if you have a rounder shape, emphasise your neckline with a V-neck or some statement jewellery. If you’re more of a rectangle, invest in some belts to define your waist a little. If you’re ever unsure, find a style guide online.
And lastly...
Comparison is the thief of joy
We’re all guilty of figuratively zooming in on qualities we envy in others, and there are multiple reasons, not all of which are bad. But in the process, we lose sight of what we have as individuals. We tend to forget that because we’re all doing it, others are envious of us too! And that glossy-skinned influencer you follow probably looks different in the light of day anyway (and by different, I mean human). No-one can compete with you, because you’re unique. Hemingway felt the same. Look it up.
