Nothing's Quite Like A Bit Of Czafari

The singer, songwriter and DJ 'makes up' for lost time with her first single of 2022.

POSTED BY ED LEES

Czafari is an up and coming singer, songwriter and DJ based in the West Midlands, and her new single, Make Up, releases on the 22nd of August. Inspired by the likes of Arlo Parks and Joy Crookes, but also Erykah Badu, Czafari specialises in alternative indie, R&B, pop and soul.

Instantly noticeable when listening to Czafari is the similarities to her and Erykah Badu’s singing voice. But even more noticeable when listening to Make Up is the similarities it shares with indie-pop artist Clairo’s 2017 song Pretty Girl. However, it doesn’t take long to realise that Czafari’s tune is far more adventurous and confident than your average bedroom pop song. That adventure gets kicked off very early with the drums, as the beat deceives you in the first few opening bars of the song, but also the general instrumentation and progression of the track naturally helps it flow out of its opening hook.

The song’s lyrics are reflective, self critical and passes judgement all whilst the electric piano remains a constant in the song, much like an old friend reassuring you as the chorus eventually does once we reach the title line, “Nothing’s Quite Like a bit of Make Up”. This is the song’s seemingly natural and thematic climax, which is built up to in an appropriate and thoroughly satisfying way.

Therefore, a feeling of entirety can’t help but be garnered when listening to this song thanks to its composition and mix. Make Up seems to exist in its own unique world that we’re briefly transported to, which proves the point that nothing’s quite like a bit of Czafari.
