Not Just Bridgerton: 8 TV Shows With The Best Period Fashion

They’ll make you feel like you were born in the wrong century.

POSTED BY ANNMARY MAILYAN

Let me guess: you’ve binge-watched the latest Bridgerton season in a day, and since then, you've been trying to find something similar to watch to prolong the romantic Victorian mood. Well, I've got you covered. There are actually a few series that capture the same old-world charm. They aren’t as popular as Bridgerton, but believe me, they’re no less interesting, serving the best period fashion, beautiful scenery, family intrigues, and the perfect atmosphere of those times.

The Forsytes

The Forsytes are probably the richest and most prestigious clan in England. They’re the definition of a perfect family—or so it seems, because they sure have their dark secrets and problems they try to solve without making any scandals. The story takes place in central London during the Victorian Era, so you’ll be enjoying a lot of the high fashion of that period.

Downton Abbey

If you want to witness how the fashion changed throughout the Edwardian era, then search no further, cause Downton Abbey is the show you’re looking for. You will follow along with the aristocratic Crawley family and see how they lived during perhaps the most transformative period of our history. Watching how events, like the war, the plague, the Roaring Twenties, affected not only people’s lives but their style as well is truly fascinating.

The Buccaneers

A group of wealthy American girls move to London to find the true love of their lives. Things didn’t go as smoothly as they hoped, though, as the girls realized there was a huge difference between American and English upbringing, worldview, behavior, and, of course, fashion. Will the main characters be able to preserve their style and dignity, or will the foreign system suppress them? You’ll have to watch the show to find it out.

Dickinson

Have you ever imagined what it would feel like if the older periods got mixed with today’s world? Well, you don’t have to guess anymore, as the series about the famous American poet shows exactly that. Dickinson is set in the 19th century, and it’s basically period fashion with a modern twist. This combination may feel a little unexpected at first, but believe me, you’ll definitely like it.

The Great

If you ever wondered how aristocrats dressed in the 18th century in Russia, this is your chance to see it yourself. This show tells you the history of the longest-ruling female leader of Russia, Catherine the Great. It isn’t boring, though, I promise, as it is filled with sarcastic jokes and dark humor, along with the most amazing period costumes of the time.

Outlander

You don’t always come across a historical TV show with fantasy elements, so Outlander is definitely a must-watch. The life of the main character, Claire Randall, turns upside down when she suddenly time-travels from 1945 all the way back to 1743. Now she has to get used to a new way of living, new rules, and, obviously, new fashion. It may sound cool now, but imagine having to wear all those layers of clothes and tight corsets 24/7. Doesn’t sound too comfortable, does it?

Sanditon

Nowadays life is pretty much the same in both big cities and small towns. But back in the Regency Era, things were quite different. That’s why when Charlotte Heywood moves from her small country to a big town, she finds herself in a whole new world. She has to quickly learn how to navigate her life in Sanditon and deal with its difficulties and scandals. The engaging plot is complemented by beautiful costumes and the picturesque seaside scenery.

The Gilded Age

The conflict of old and new has always existed. A great example of this is shown in The Gilded Age, where two families fight for their opposing beliefs. Which one is better: sticking to old traditions or breaking those habits to create something entirely new? That’s what Marian Brooke, the main character of the series, has to decide. The show is set in New York in the 1880s, when modern tendencies affected not only the economy and everyday life but fashion as well.
