Nicki Minaj under Fire for False Covid-19 Vaccine Claims

Trinidadian rapper Nicki Minaj is facing severe backlash for comments she made on Twitter regarding the Covid-19 vaccine and its side effects. 

On September 13th, the ‘Barbie Tingz’ hitmaker took to Twitter to share misleading information about testicular after-effects of taking the vaccine. Supposedly, a friend of Minaj’s cousin  in Trinidad got the vaccine and reported testicular swelling and prolonged impotency. 

My cousin in Trinidad won’t get the vaccine cuz his friend got it & became impotent. His testicles became swollen. His friend was weeks away from getting married, now the girl called off the wedding. So just pray on it & make sure you’re comfortable with ur decision, not bullied

This was in response to Nicki’s notable absence from the 2021 Met Gala. Entitled ‘In America: A Lexicon of Fashion’, Nicki was nowhere to be seen at the elite gathering at which she is usually a mainstay. Minaj responded with the above tweet, implying she was not allowed to attend because she remains unvaccinated. She later took to Twitter to conduct a Twitter poll for which jab she should get, wanting to do her own research before receiving it. 

Trinidadian health officials are reportedly unhappy with the rapper, having “wasted so much time” in attempts to verify the claims by the rapper. Health minister Terrence Dayalsingh said it is policy for health officials to take all claims seriously. Some have even pointed out that the symptoms Minaj described in the infamous aligned closer with chlamydia - a sexually transmitted disease. 

The controversy was even raised at a British press conference attended by Boris Johnson at which he admitted to being unfamiliar with Nicki’s music - but professed his familiarity with the work of Nikki Khanani, the medical director of primary care at the NHS. 

As if this story could not get not any more absurd, Minaj responded to Boris with the following statement and voice memo.

Today Nicki tweeted about a reported invitation she had received from the White House, calling it “a step in the right direction.” She’s also planning to pay homage to Reese Witherspoon’s Legally Blonde character with pink suit to “show I mean business.”
