5 Things To Know About Netflix’ ‘Shirley’

Shirley Anita Chisholm was the first African American woman in Congress and the first to run for president. Netflix is teaming up with Oscar winning Regina King and writer, director John Ridley to tell her story. 

Renowned director

John Ridley has directed American Crime, Needle in a Timestack, Guerilla, Godfather of Harlem and other titles.

All-star cast

The cast of ‘Shirley’ will include Regina King, Lance Reddick, Lucas Hedges, Christina Jackson, Michael Cherrie, Dorian Missick, Amirah Vann, W. Earl Brown, André Holland, and Terrence Howard.

Exclusive plot

According to Netflix, the film will “... tell the story of Chisholm's boundary-breaking and historic presidential campaign, based on exclusive and extensive conversations with family, friends and those who knew her best.”

The film is currently in production in Cincinnati, US where filming started in December of last year.

Release date:

Netflix’ Shirley is expected to be released in late 2022 or early 2023.
