My Controversial Fashion Opinions
Breaking the so-called fashion rules—because style is all about confidence, not conformity.
Fashion is all about personal expression, but some opinions are more shocking than others. One day, something is so fashionable it’s on Paris runways and the next it’s suddenly tacky. Who decides what’s fashionable and when? Why do trends always change? Fashion is all about feeling good and being confident, so here are my controversial opinions on what will forever be fashionable in my eyes, even if ever-changing trends may make society despise these.
1. Double Denim
Denim on denim is never a fashion crime. There, I said it. The right denim duo can look effortlessly cool and vintage.
2. Mismatched colors
Who made matching a required rule for looking good? Fashion can be risky and it’s all about experimenting. A hot pink skirt with a bright orange skirt? Electric. A light blue top with mid-blue jeans. So chic. These don’t always have to clash.
3. Sunglasses in the winter
The winter sun is still blinding, like in summer. The mysterious allure of a pair of sunglasses is something so chic and completely underrated. Whether it’s oversized black frames with a trench coat or sleek, sporty wrap-around with a puffer coat, they add polish to any outfit, making them both practical and stylish.
4. Animal print is overrated
Leopard, zebra, and snakeskin. They all have an expiration date. Yes, they can be bold and fun, yet if paired incorrectly, it can look tacky and messy.
5. All-black fits only once in a while
Wearing all-black is a fashion cheat code. It’s easy and careless and no one pays too much attention to what you’re wearing. Sure it can look sleek and effortless, but wearing head-to-toe black all the time is predictable and can lack creativity.
6. Low-waisted is more fashionable
High-waisted everything dominated the fashion world for years on end, but for about a year now, I have realised that low-waisted is simply cooler. They give off that effortless 90s supermodel vibe that high-waisted could never replicate.
7. Maxi Skirts over Mini
Mini skirts are fun, risky, and perfect for summer, however, nothing could compare to the elegance and versatility of a maxi skirt. They work across all seasons and always make an outfit appear stylish and vintage. When a mini can feel like you’re constantly pulling it down, a maxi lets you stride through life with confidence and comfort.
8. Winter Fashion > Summer Fashion
Give me a structured trench coat, a cashmere jumper, and knee-high boots to put over some lace tights over a sundress and flip-flops any day. Summer fashion is freeing, however, winter fashion is powerful. Layering is an art, coats are a statement and winter accessories are unbeatable.
So perhaps my fashion opinions are controversial. But in a world where trends come and go, the most important style rule is this: if you love it, wear it. Who cares what the trend forecast is?
