Met Gala 2019 — Some Camp Theatrical Genius And Some Didn’t Get The Memo
Our notes on this year's camp fashion.
THE fashion event of the year has been and gone yet the Met Gala 2019 is all anyone is talking about. Camp: Notes on Fashion took place at the annual benefit event for the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and proved an exhibition of theatrics, exaggeration, and interpretation. Not all interpreted the theme so well, natural makeup looks and neutral tones, what must Anna Wintour have thought to some of the results? We present our best outfits, makeup, and hair from the glamorous event with those hitting the mark displaying color, quirkiness and daring choices.
Our Favorites Are:
Lady Gaga
As one of the four chairs of this year's event, Gaga stole the show with not one, not two, not three, but four outfits! Gaga’s Brandon Maxwell hot pink dress stole the spotlight — the color so on point with the vibrancy of camp making sure all eyes were on her dramatic entrance. The first outfit was topped off with a huge pink bow in her hair, a nod to Gaga’s old style in which she adds her own flair to camp. Next, Gaga stripped to a black dress, posing for the press while holding an umbrella she shows how the Met Ball is done. Switching back to a hot pink number Gaga posed again in a sleek floor-length dress with OTT sunglasses to capture the exaggeration of camp. Finally, as if Gaga hadn’t blown us away already she strips to black sparkly lingerie while carting around her ‘House of Gaga’ goodies, she looked a total icon. Gaga complimented her look with hot pink lipstick and wild gold eyelashes created by talented makeup artist Sarah Tanno.

Ezra Miller
Here is someone who certainly captured the theme. Theatrical. The only word needed to sum up this look. Oh, and perfect. Ezra Miller, who does not identify as either male or female was looking like an androgynous queen with his outfit consisting of matching a black and white pinstriped blazer and trouser set with a white shirt underneath and chain corset, complete with a train. The makeup was one of a kind, illustrating the concept of illusion that comes with camp, the multiple eyes were perfectly painted on and complimented with a mask which added to the concept. This makeup look lets the viewer make their own conclusion, unleashing your true self, the illusions of camp? Whatever the idea, we vote it one of the best dressed.
Kylie Jenner
Iconic. Capturing the concept of camp, Kylie looked like a purple dream and this color is certainly going to be all anyone wants to wear this spring/summer. Kylie’s Versace dress spoke to the avant-garde style of the designer himself who identified as gay, a perfect choice for this year’s theme. Purple hair, sultry eyes, huge purple feather bower and sheer chain bodycon maxi dress with a feathered bottom, is there any words left to describe the look? In true Kardashian style Kylie opted for long, sleek hair. The hair left all eyes to the outfit, while still making a statement that purple is in. The sultry eyes gave a nod to the eye makeup mastery of camp queens and showed that camp makeup doesn’t have to be exaggerated, anyone can wear it well. This year's theme offers so much for interpretation, some go for quirk, but Kylie went for glamour and it certainly paid off.
Lizzo
Pink, pink, and more pink. Clearly, this rising singer knew her vibe at the Met this year and was not afraid to go all out. Dressed in Marc Jacobs, Lizzo stunned in her camp look, the empire-waist gown created a classic silhouette with a touch of sexy glamour with a thigh-high split, an ode to the camp theme. What queen can attend the Met without a cape? The feathered cape was also pink of course and added the camp flair that aided Lizzo in hitting the theme perfectly. Wearing a pink sculpted wig, adorned with crystals for some added wow. This look was extra, and perfect for the Met Gala 2019.
Lupita Nyong’o
Hidden meanings and stunning visuals, Lupita’s look spoke to black culture and identity. We must talk about the hair, the eye-catching afro completed with a gold crown of afro picks shows how to camp and black culture can work in harmony. The afro picks had raised fists for handles, making a statement of solidarity while in keeping with the theme thanks to the gold color. Hairstylist Vernon Francois revealed the hair was inspired by a self-portrait named ‘Pickin’ by artist Lauren Kelly, who also wore a crown of hair picks. As if Lupita’s hair wasn't statementing enough, her rainbow-colored butterfly dressed showed how black women can own any, and every color, while acknowledging the theme as only the best have.
Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas
The pair who famously met at a Met Gala show how couples can complement each other without looking cringe. Wearing Dior, Priyanka wore a dramatic caged tulle dress, with a rainbow feathered skirt and cape, another celeb who realizes this year's theme is going big or go home. A team of ten created the masterpiece that is Priyanka’s dress and took 1500 hours to do so. Her look had a camp space princess vibe, with her stunning headpiece delicately placed upon her afro hair, was certainly appropriate for the camp theme. Her icy brows and frosted eyelashes compliment the entire look and allow her purple eye and lip color to stand out, much like the silver dress allowed a multi-colored train to be the center of attention. Nick Jonas matched Priyanka perfectly in his Dior and Chopard white and silver ensemble while remaining slightly more toned down, no doubt to let Priyanka shine.
Aquaria
RuPaul’s Drag Race season 10 winner Aquaria made history as the first drag queen to appear at the met, along with fellow queen Violet Chachki. Aquaria stole the show and provided a true demonstration as to how to work Camp: Notes on Fashion. It’s all in the detail for Aquaria, here is someone who got the memo. Wearing a white cured Joey George wig, featuring micro fringe and sharp details, Aquaria shows she deserves to be at this year's event. In a black ruffled number, Aquaria let her accessories do the talking and, in true drag fashion, wore sharp, half-gloves by Garo Sparo. A look nobody will forget from this year’s event.
Billy Porter
Reining the red carpet was Billy Porter, embodying something of a sun deity at the Met this year. Like Gaga, Porter did not make his entrance alone but was carried into by six gorgeous bearers, because why not. The 24-carat gold headpiece and gold bedazzled eyes shone out amongst the crowd of invitees this year and not only that but his gold catsuit was embellished with 10ft wings, this display of Ancient Egyptian regality was one to watch this year.
These Stars Missed The Theme:
Jennifer Lopez
Seemed to miss the memo for this event. Obviously, JLo looked stunning in her silver Versace dress yet the look appears to be an advert for her latest single in which she serves a look similar to her Met choice. Her hair was covered by her headpiece and the makeup was a classic look for her. The theme this year left anything open for interpretation, yet JLo seemed to play it a little safe.
Lily Collins
Staying to her true retro style yet failed to add the camp flair, this look is one that fell short at this year's event. Wearing a white dress reminiscent of the 60s baby doll fit, featuring a train (clearly a look everyone copped this year) Lily looked stunning but didn’t quite hit the marked theme-wise. Her black hair was styled into a beehive adorned with white flowers and pushed back with a headband; this look was a different vibe to most celebs at the event but perhaps not quite appropriate.
Gwyneth Paltrow
Subtle is not the one for this event. Gwyneth Paltrow shows how camp doesn’t work when subtle, the vibrant yellow is a nod to this year's theme, yet the entire look is way to toned down for the Met Gala. Paltrow’s makeup look was pretty but again just not the look that icons like Gaga pulled out of the bag. The sleek straight hair may have worked for Kylie, but it allowed her outfit to shine, Gwyneth sadly looks out of place here.
Kim Kardashian
Hear me out on this one. Kim looked every inch an icon and her concept was insanely cool with water droplet details and wet- look hair, she represents how we all want to look when stepping out the ocean (but sadly often don’t). However – Where is the glamour? Where is the exaggeration? The theme seems off with her look and the makeup is just the classic, neutral Kardashian vibe. Perhaps we can let her off, Kim turned straight to designer Mugler upon hearing the theme of this year's Met Gala, calling him the ‘king of camp’ which is a great choice regarding the theme. Of course, Kim never fails to look gorgeous, but the Met Gala is an excuse to go all out, and sadly she didn’t.
Harry Styles
As another chair of this year’s Met Gala, you would think Harry Styles would go all out like Gaga. Unfortunately, not. Style’s all black number did not fulfill fans dreams of flamboyancy and flair, instead, his look was rather conservative. The all black ruffled Gucci blouse and trousers was somewhat of a disappointment in comparison to some celeb’s radical response to this year’s theme. Sorry, Harry.
