Melanie Martinez Gets Extraterrestrial in New Album Announcement
Portals is set to release on March 31st.
Melanie Martinez is ready to release a new album, or should we say hatch? In an alien-esque announcement to their Instagram, the singer shared the cover and title of her third studio project. Portals, slated to release in March, will be an outer-wordly romp mixed with Martinez’s signature ultra-girly, whimsical aesthetic.

Fans have come to know Martinez for their unique visuals, often candy-colored, playful, and nostalgic. Portals is a different turn for the “Playdate” singer, marking a divergence from her traditionally “schoolhouse rock” album art and personal fashion sense. Buried in a mossy forest, Martinez breaks out of her (literal) egg, revealing a four-eyed, pink creature with a cat-like face and large ridge-lined ears in an album teaser. This creature strikes a pose on the album’s cover, showcasing the fairy-core meets ET visuals.
A short snippet accompanied the promo video, promising what’s to come for Martinez. Fans are able to pre-order the album and accompanying merch on the singer’s website.
In previous albums, Martinez took over the persona of “Cry Baby,” an emotional schoolgirl, loosely based on Martinez’s past self back in their school days. In Portals, Cry Baby is reborn as a rose-colored pixie, furthering Cry Baby’s story. Martienz’s latest album was 2019’s K-12 and even had an accompanying film with the same title.
We’re excited to see what wonderful weirdness will come out of the portal.
