Long live pop punk! Canadian artist LØLØ’s new single “5, 6, 7, 8” is a heart-pumping, anthemic entry to the pop punk genre’s recent resurgence. LØLØ said of the song’s meaning: “You know it probably isn’t going to work out between you two, and that fucking sucks— so you try to avoid it… but that only makes things worse.”

Master of the metaphor, LØLØ’s use of euphemism plays on how quick we are to avoid conflict and ignore problems in a relationship. Willing to see a trainwreck through to the bitter end, we gladly hop on the rollercoaster ride of being with the wrong person. LØLØ and her mismatched love drown out their problems to a thumping dance beat, running out the clock on “5, 6, 7, 8”. It’s a fun duet with LØLØ and Travis Mills proving how thrilling a doomed pairing can be.

“So we just keep on dancing around the truth, that in the end it won’t be me and you”

The single sees LØLØ in her pop-punk element, mixing the playfulness the genre’s known for with a modern spin. High energy with a twinge of cursed love melancholy, the invigorating guitar makes for an addictive listen. LØLØ’s soaring vocals deliver some of the track’s most raw lyrics. Featuring artist girlfriends’ Travis Mills honors the male pop punk vocalists of the early 2000s, bringing “5, 6, 7, 8” to an electrifying climax in the duet performance.

“You would think we rehearsed it, the way that we’re hurting,” sings Mills.

Frequently collaborating with titans of pop punk, LØLØ recently joined Simple Plan on their re-release of their iconic smash-hit “I’m Just a Kid” last November. Her whirlwind summer saw the 25-year-old perform at Lollapalooza following the Sad Summer Festival tour where she played alongside bands such as Waterparks and Mayday Parade. The rising star will perform at the Slam Dunk Festival on May 27th and 28th in the UK.
