Lizzo Gets Real About Depression
“I didn’t want to live anymore”
Lizzo just got real with fans—opening up about her deepest struggles and the journey that brought her back.
During her Lizzo In Real Life show in Los Angeles, the singer revealed the raw emotion behind her upcoming album title, Love in Real Life.
“I named it that because about a year and a half ago, I was in such a dark, deep depression,” she told the crowd, holding back tears. “I was so heartbroken by the world and so deeply hurt that I didn’t want to live anymore.”
The moment was heavy. Lizzo explained how fear and pain had left her feeling completely isolated—until a single fan broke through.
At a past concert, a stranger approached her and simply said: “Lizzo, I love you.”
“They reached out, and then I reached out,” she recalled. “And we hugged, and it felt so damn good.” Soon, that love multiplied—from 10 people to 10,000 people, all embracing her. “And it was fucking lifesaving.”
Lizzo made it clear she wasn’t looking for sympathy. Instead, she wanted to remind anyone struggling with darkness: reach out.
“I know somebody here tonight is going through it,” she said. “Or they’ve been betrayed, lied about, hated for those lies. It’s a universal feeling. But I’m telling you—reach out.”
The Controversy Still Lingers
This marked Lizzo’s first performance since she was sued in 2023 by former employees for sexual harassment and workplace bullying. Three of her dancers accused her of creating a hostile work environment, followed by designer Asha Daniels, who claimed she faced bullying, harassment, and racial discrimination while working with Lizzo.
Lizzo denied all allegations, calling them “false” and “sensationalized.” In December 2024, a judge dismissed Daniels’ case, but the lawsuit involving the dancers is still in appeals.
New Music, New Era
Despite everything, Lizzo is moving forward. She just dropped her latest track, “Still Bad,” following the title song Love in Real Life.
And in case you missed it—she also hit a major personal milestone earlier this year, celebrating her weight loss journey.
“I haven’t seen this number since 2014!” she shared online. “Let this be a reminder—you can do anything you put your mind to.”
Lizzo’s back. And she’s making sure the world knows it.
