We Interview Lexie Liu For The SuperdrySounds SS18 Campaign

One to watch.

POSTED BY DEE CUNNING

How upbeat are you feeling right now on a scale of one to festival? If your heart's stuck in #Beychella like a camping chair in a mud puddle, then you, oh glittery one, have shimmered into the right corner of the interwebz. This spring/summer, Superdry is going on a worldwide festival tour, teaming up with some exciting up-and-coming musicians for its SuperdrySounds campaign.

Among them is Chinese R&B and hip-hop star Lexie Liu, who has already played the huge SXSW festival, as well as coming fourth in Korea's K-Pop Star 5. Her biggest hit 'Coco Made Me Do It' has been played in China over five million times – and it's not hard to see why.

We caught up with the about-to-blow-up singer, rapper and dance talent to get to know the girl behind the “ball hard” attitude.

Hey Lexie, how's it going? What have you been up to lately?

Hi! I’ve been working on some new music for the next album and some choreography clips for my upcoming performances.

Describe your sound in three words.

Unexpected, fresh and a little husky.

You're perhaps best known for your first single 'Coco Made Me Do It'. We love it! But we're dying to know, who is Coco and what did she make you do?

Coco is an artist who goes by the name Coco Lee – one of the first international artists representing China. The core concept of this song is the ‘ball hard’ attitude that Coco inspired in me.

That track got over five million plays online in China! How did you feel about that?

I’m surprised how my debut single worked in China, and I truly appreciate the people who understand my music.

Soon after, you performed at SXSW festival which is absolutely huge. How did that come about?

The vibe there is absolutely amazing and I enjoyed my two performances there.

You studied in the U.S, right?

Yes, for college.

Lexie is wearing the Pacific Cost Vest Top and Acid Dungaree Boyshorts by Superdry.

Let's go back to your roots. What's your musical background?

I’ve never been trained in music professionally, actually. However, when I was four years old, my parents took me to dance lessons as a hobby.

Which artists did you listen to growing up?

Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga and the Black Eyed Peas.

Another amazing Lexie Liu fact: You came fourth in Korea's K-Pop Star 5. Can you tell us a bit about that?

It’s been a beautiful journey. I stayed in Korea for half a year all alone not knowing how to speak Korean haha. I learned a lot from the judges, the crew and other contestants.

What opportunities came from it?

I got opportunities to stay in Korea and develop my career as an idol.

Can you name a favorite person that you've collaborated with in your career?

Vava, a Chinese female rapper who is also one of my best friends.

We've heard some people calling you the Chinese Rihanna, so we have to ask, what do you think about that?

Rihanna has been a great inspiration for my life and career and I love her. However I prefer to have a style of my own.

Lexie is wearing the Eliza Cut Off Shorts by Superdry.

Well, like Rihanna, you've got an incredible fashion sense. How would you describe your style?

Thank you so much for that. My style is a little boyish and comfy, but with some feminine elements in it as well.

Let us give you a super-tough question: If you had to pick one item of clothing to wear every day for the rest of your life, what would it be?

I would say a black tank top – super easy to go with the rest of my daily style and it’s comfy.

Finally, what's next for Lexie Liu?

My debut album is coming out in the next couple of months, full of my ideas and love. I really hope people like it and feel my music.

Thanks so much for talking to us!

Thank you!
