From Collages To Community: How 'Landing' Is Redefining Creativity Online
Miri Buckland shares Landing's next steps.
Miri Buckland and Ellie Buckingham met at Stanford Business School. Miri enjoyed maths and science and Ellie was into art, but they shared one fundamental belief – everyone can be and feel creative.
Together they created Landing. In an interview with Fizzy Mag, co-founder Miri Buckland told us about the unexpected evolution of Landing and their plans for the future.
“We both felt like there was a need to create ways for people to feel more creative in their daily lives.” Said Miri.
In 2019, Landing (then called Landing Home) began as an interior design collaging tool and marketplace.
“You could collage your couch with your rug and a lamp, make decisions about it and then actually purchase pieces.”
Suddenly, people started to utilize Landing in ways Miri and Ellie hadn’t expected. Vision boards and fashion mood boards began to pop up all over the site and the evolution that followed was very user-led.
“We didn't set out to use Landing as a social collaging platform or a place where you could create all sorts of things. It started very differently, but we saw our users at every twist and turn using Landing in new and exciting ways. And we kept pulling that thread.”
Last year, the Landing platform grew with the edition of an app – a space where users can interact, chat and share their boards.
“A big part of our mission is to empower people to feel creative and communicate with others. So we think a lot about how people can connect over the visuals that they’re inspired by, or by the things that they create, even if they don’t speak the same language.”
The shopping component of Landing has recently evolved to cater to those who enjoy creating fashion and styling collages. Users can now shop from other people's boards, gaining inspiration in a way that is genuine and authentic.
“It’s really cool because you can go down these rabbit holes of – ‘how are people styling the thing that I might want to buy’ or ‘where could I buy that?.”
Landing offers a refreshing way for brands to get a feel for how their products are received. They can upload their pieces to Landing to see an authentic reaction to their products without pushing them. They can search for their brand on the app or website and see how creatives are putting their products to use through collaging.
For the future, Miri hopes that she, Ellie, and their team can “keep building a space for positivity, inspiration, and discovery on the internet that feels refreshing and genuinely built for this generation.”
