How Japanese Streetwear Is Influencing My Look
All-black has never looked better.
Japan has been a hotspot for cool streetwear for what feels like forever, but as we see the decline of the Clean Girl aesthetic and reliance on minimalist 'model off-duty' looks, I've seen more of a fascination with Japanese streetwear online.
After all, random passers-by in Japan don't have stylists, which makes their cool ensembles all the more of a flex. I discovered influencer Akimoto Kozue recently and fell in love with an all-black look she wore: a shirt, tie, skort, knee-high socks and heels.
Once upon a time, I wore ties on the regular. I thought they looked especially stylish on women and created a kind of preppy, edgy look. I'd pair them with corsets and blazers and whatever I could think of, until I felt I'd exhausted my possibilities. Seeing this Akimoto look reminded me that a shirt and tie can be effortless, and with the skort and long socks, surprisingly girly.
Something else I've picked up from seeing general Japanese streetwear is an affinity for big, slouchy bags. I have a red leather one that I've dug out of my wardrobe specifically to channel this style.
