How To Dress to Shake the January Blues Away

Because winter doesn’t get to decide my mood — or my outfit.

POSTED BY TASNIM MIAH

For a lot of us, January has a way of dragging its feet. Christmas is over, the days feel endlessly gray, the sun sets far too early—and all I can think about is the amount of slouching on the sofa I’ve managed in the period between Christmas and New Year (which is completely well deserved, obviously!). But as someone who truly believes in the look-good, feel-good philosophy, I feel as though January is that one month where I usually rinse and repeat the same boring outfit, regardless of where I’m going. This year, though, I’m making it my mission to change that. And no, you don’t have to replace your entire wardrobe to rebrand for the new year. But one thing’s for certain: I’m not letting the January winter blues dull my wardrobe.

The first rule I’m dressing by?

Up styling the basics

I’m rediscovering the staples and giving them a new energy through layering. A white tank becomes the foundation for an unbuttoned shirt, finished with a jumper casually over my shoulders, or an oversized, shoulder-padded blazer.

A simple maxi skirt, previously reserved for summer days out, suddenly feels winter-ready when worn with an oversized sweater, a leather jacket, a hooded balaclava scarf, and some chunky loafers or boots.

Bold Colors

Bright, bold, and unapologetic. That’s my 2026 motto. January doesn’t need more beige, so I’m leaning into combinations that almost feel rebellious for winter: electric blue, cherry red, butter yellow, flashes of lime green. Even the smallest hint of color can completely transform the mood of an outfit. It’s proof that dressing for the season doesn’t have to mean dressing dull.

Embracing Texture

The final change in how I'm approaching January style is embracing texture. And I’m talking faux fur, leather, ribbed knits, metallic jewelry. These little details add depth and intention to any outfit.

Because, honestly, dressing through January doesn’t have to mean simply surviving it. By reworking staples in your wardrobe, playing with color, and leaning into texture, getting dressed becomes a small but powerful act of optimism.

Quick reminder: style doesn’t have to hibernate just because it’s cold outside—if anything, it can be the ultimate mood booster!
