We Interviewed The Creator Of KENNEDY Design

Fiona Kennedy talks about her brand goals, creating a safe space, and Barras.

POSTED BY SOPHIE CLARK

Stepping out of the crowded Barras walkways and into Fiona Kennedy's shop is like entering a different world. Her shop is the perfect reflection of the clothes she designs: alternative, queer, and exceptionally cool.

Drawing inspiration from Joan Jett, Cherrie Currie, and David Bowie, KENNEDY strikes a stunning balance between goth, glam rock, and punk fashions. This individualized style attracts people from the alternative scene from all over the world.

Fiona told us that as someone who has had bad changing room experiences, she is conscious of the struggles of trying to find clothes that are fun to wear but also fit well. This led to not only a full-size range, but a willingness to work with people who aren't sure about their size or don't fit into standard sizes.

This level of care for clothing bodies outside of the norm makes KENNEDY an especially positive brand for a few groups. Queer folks find themselves drawn to the brand for inclusivity, and to Fiona for her openness and the safe space she works so hard to create, and with the willingness to tailor to anyone KENNEDY is the perfect space for trans bodies.

On top of already being body-inclusive to so many people, Fiona told us that she is looking to work more towards creating clothes for people who are physically disabled. A group that goes overlooked so often in fashion, deserves clothes as stylish as those offered by KENNEDY design.

Not only is the shop a safe space in vibes but it is physically a wonderful place to be. Fiona opened the KENNEDY shop in May 2022 and has created a space that works exceptionally well for her goals. The shop is within The Barras marketplace and feels like a physical embodiment of the alt scene in Glasgow.

We discussed how the Barras has changed for the better. The market has begun to house a wider range of stores, and KENNEDY is a great example of the changing ways, it's young, fresh, and it's just as intertwined with the community as any older shop. KENNEDY is a store that's moving forward and keeping up with the community all at the same time.
