International Transgender Day of Visibility

March 31st is a time to celebrate and acknowledge transgender and non-binary people

One of the most difficult things in life, is to be so boldly yourself, with an unapologetic attitude. March 31st is International Transgender Day of Visibility, which is held annually. On this day we shed light to how brave it is for transgender and non-binary people to come forward and present themselves to the world, in the way they feel their most authentic selves.

Not only is the bravery and admiration brought to attention, it is also crucial to acknowledge the growing numbers of violence and discrimination towards trans and non-binary people. In 2020, the lives of 45 trans and nonconforming people were killed. Unfortunately this year alone, there have been several anti-trans bills brought into state legislatures. A large portion of these laws target trans youth.

One of the more intense laws passed on trans rights happened in Arkansas—lawmakers are attempting to dismantle gender-affirming healthcare. Governor Asa Hutchinson has the ability to veto this law.

Contact him at asa.hutchinson@governor.arkansas.gov and demand to see a change! Transathelete.com includes contact information and call scripts.

While taking action is an imperative step to make a difference, it is also crucial to educate yourself on the topic. Visit transreads.org to read about transgender history. There are also documentaries on transhood on Netflix and HBO.

Understanding that transitioning appears different for every individual and under no circumstances is it ever okay to ask about a transgender/non-binary persons body or medical history. As well as understanding, accountability is key to being an ally. Be accountable with the impact that misgendering can have on an individual. Misgendering is using the wrong pronouns or name, while speaking to or of the person.

Another way to support trans and non-binary people in your life, or just in general, is disclosure. Never share personal stories or information with someone confined in you with. Respect others wishes, to keep certain things private.
