One more thing to make the Coronavirus lockdown a bit more okay.

Not so different to Netflix Watch Party, which has also gained immense popularity since lockdown measures being put in place around the world, Instagram as introduced a feature for those who are missing social interaction. The new co-watching feature allows users to video chat whilst scrolling through your feed together and enables you to share Instagram content to the group.

As Instagram has stated: ‘To help people stay connected, we’ve launched media sharing, a new feature that allows you to view Instagram posts together with your friends over video chat. You can start a video chat by tapping the video chat icon in the Direct inbox or in an existing Direct thread, then view saved, like and suggested photos/videos by tapping the photo icon in the bottom left corner in an ongoing video chat.’

Although different from scrolling through your regular Instagram feed, this means you could create and save content to share with your group, liking relevant posts that can be accessed in-stream. Whilst the feature wasn’t expected to launch so soon, despite being hinted at last year, the social media company seems to have launched this feature in response to the lockdowns and social isolation occurring.

As well as this, Instagram has allowed users to create their own funding drives for non-profit organizations aiding the fight against Covid-19, with a section within the Donation sticker options that highlight relevant charities.
