Remembering The Legacy Of The Late British Designer Alexander McQueen.
The talented designer tragically took his own life on 11th February 2010. Leaving behind a legacy of creativity and style. Before his death, McQueen captivated his audience at his catwalk shows showcasing his gritty take on fashion. Describing his view on fashion as finding beauty in the grotesque.
The British designer grew up in London, England, the son of English parents with Scottish roots. And had a fascination with creating extravagant catwalk presentations. One of which being his controversial ‘Highland Rape’ catwalk show showcased in autumn/winter 1995-1996. The catwalk show sparked outrage and is considered to be the show and collection that stapled McQueen’s reputation in the fashion world.
Alexander McQueen describes the collection as expressing his feelings on the relationship between Scotland and England. When the collection was first showcased the models where covered in blood, half-naked with their clothing torn apart. At first glance, his audience thought that the collection referenced an actual rape and that the fashion designer was trying to exploit women but McQueen explained that this was not the case. His response being that the true background behind the collection was ‘This collection was a shout against English designers .... doing flamboyant Scottish clothes. My father’s family originates from the Isle of Skye, and I’d studied the history of the Scottish upheavals and the clearances. People were so unintelligent that they thought it was about women being raped - yet the Highland Rape was about England’s Rape on Scotland.
The iconic designer used his designs to share his personal views and ideas on certain subjects. And is considered as one of the best British designers of all time that will forever be remembered for his genius talent and cheeky-chappy personality.
