How To Simplify Your Life And Closet

Practical tips that will help you make it happen.

POSTEDBYFIONA WOOD

These days we’re told that shopping is the key to happiness, so we constantly check for discount and browse shops in order to find that item that we’ve seen on Instagram or in a magazine. We buy and buy until we end up with a closet full of clothes that we don’t know what to do with. So we throw everything at once and after some time, we continue to fill the closet with the same stuff, until we get bored again. So, if you’re planning to simplify your closet (and your life), here are some practical tips that will help you make it happen:

1. Know your personal style

Sometimes, it’s difficult to know your style when every piece of clothing you come across seems stylish and attractive. Now, knowing your style doesn’t mean wearing only a few types of clothes for the rest of your life, but rather, determining what you like and dislike so you’ll know what to buy. For example, if you’ve never felt comfortable wearing pink, that means that you really shouldn’t buy pink clothes, no matter how trendy they might seem at that moment. Of course, you’re allowed to change your style preferences, but if you don’t like something at all, there’s no point in buying it, no matter how practical, cheap or fashionable it is.

2. Buy only things you really like

The problem with discounts is that they often cause you to buy the stuff you wouldn’t buy otherwise. Same can be said for thrift stores because things are cheap and seem more unique, so people are often enticed to buy them because they know they won’t be able to find that same piece elsewhere. Yet, continuous shopping for cheap and seemingly unique items can create a lot of clutter in your wardrobe. Therefore, it’s much better to buy things that you really like. There’s no point in buying stuff that you don’t feel connected to, and if you only own the things you love wearing, then it’s much easier to look good whenever you’re leaving your home.

3. Get a few essential pieces

If you want to have a tidy and functional wardrobe, then buying a few essential and timeless pieces is the key. Having one white buttoned shirt, a classic pair of jeans and an LBD are always the safe bet, as these items rarely go out of style. Similarly, it’s recommended to have two or three classic cocktail dresses for every occasion and weather condition, in case you get invited to a fancy cocktail party. Other must-have items are a trench coat, classic black pumps, neutrally-colored blazer and a pair of riding boots. Maybe some of these things seem redundant and not compatible with your regular style, but having them will definitely pay off in the long run.

4. Organize a giveaway for your friends

In case you don’t know what to do with the clothes you don’t need anymore, then giving it to your friends is always the safe bet. Plus, you’ll make someone very happy and for even more fun, you can create a girl evening with snacks, wine and music where your friends will try out clothes and make the decision on the spot. This is much better than randomly giving stuff to whoever, as then they’d feel uncomfortable to turn you down. Additionally, you can donate your clothes to those who really need it, like poor college students or single mums in your area who are already struggling as it is. Whatever you do, you really shouldn’t feel regret for giving our your stuff, because if you do, then it would be best to sell all your stuff online for a lower price.

Conclusion

Organizing your closet isn’t hard, but once you do it, you have to be consistent with your spending habits, so you won’t end up with a full closet again. Learn how to shop cleverly and don’t spend too much on things you won’t wear often. If you’re unsure, you can always ask an experienced friend to go shopping with you, so you’ll be able to choose the right clothes that you’ll actually wear. If you must pay a bit more, then focus on purchasing high-quality pieces that are really worth the price, because sweaters, graphic tees and other regular items can be found everywhere, so if you’re buying something more expensive, then focus on coats, quality jackets and comfortable shoes since they’re usually supposed to be long-lasting and regularly worn.
