You're sick with a cold, and you don't know what to do. You feel miserable, so you want it to be over as soon as possible. For many people, the first instinct is to reach for some store-bought medicine or drink many fluids. 

However, did you know that several things can help you recover more quickly? This blog post will discuss quick remedies for when your head hurts from congestion, and your throat feels scratchy to speed up your recovery process!

Rest

Take time to rest and avoid over-exerting yourself. Rest is vital for getting your immune system back on track, so don't try to do too much at once. It includes resting when you're feeling better to prevent a relapse of symptoms. 

Rest will help your body fight the virus, and you'll get better quicker. Don't forget that sleep can also be an effective remedy for the common cold, so hit the hay! 

Hydrate

Drink lots of fluids to avoid dehydration.  Warm tea, broth, chicken soup, and hot lemon water can help hydrate your body and keep you warm. Drink a minimum of one gallon per day for healthy adults, more if the weather is cold or dry.

Warm drinks reduce the length of colds. You can drink at least two cups of this every hour while awake. Try adding ginger or fresh peppermint leaves or mint extract to make it taste better. You could also add some honey for additional relief from congestion and coughs.

Use a Humidifier in Your Home

A humidifier can help you relieve the symptoms of a cold by alleviating congestion, sinuses, and dry skin. A humidifier also helps decrease coughs because it adds moisture to the air that is usually very dry in the winter months.

A humidifier is most effective when using it in a small, closed room with the door and windows shut during cold winter months because this will trap more moist air inside, which can't escape into other rooms of your home.  If you don't like using a humidifier while sleeping, try filling up an aluminum coffee pot with water and putting it on low heat next to where you are sitting or lying down for warmth without using any electricity.
