The Real Runway Is The Street

Supermodels may dominate the runway, but it’s their effortless off-duty outfits that shape the way we actually get dressed.

POSTED BY GRETCHEN DEUTSCH

We may follow models for a glimpse into their high-fashion lives, but it’s their off-duty style that truly keeps our attention. We covet the glamour of couture that takes us into another world. But when models just as effortlessly sport their comfortable, in-between runway outfits, we’re brought into reality, where fashion is relatable and attainable.

Seeing models in their off-duty looks reminds us that fashion lives just as much on the street as it does on the runway, and true personal style is revealed not in carefully constructed shows, but in the effortless outfits people wear between them.

As style crawls back to the ’90s, before the era of influencers, when fashion naturally bled into celebrity and entertainment culture, we’re once again turning to supermodels for inspiration.

“Model Off-Duty” style is simply a term for elevated, practical everyday outfits that models just happen to be wearing. It truly could be anything, but I’m partial to the likes of Gigi Hadid and Hailey Bieber, who have mastered the art of making casual dressing look impossibly chic.

If the models are wearing button-downs and classic denim, I’m pretty sure we should too. If they’re strutting the streets in ballet flats and wedge sneakers, that’s probably our cue to follow suit.
