Halima Aden Makes History With Her New Sports Illustrated Cover
Don’t change yourself, change the game!
Once again history has been made by 21-year-old Halima Aden, the Somali-American model has become the first Muslim model to work with Sports Illustrated. She can be seen gracing the pages in colorful hijabs and burkinis and is paving the way for the new dawn on representation in the industry!
Halima originates from Kenya and for her shoot, photographer Yu Tsai shot her at Watamu Beach back in her birth country.
She told Sports Illustrated:
“I keep thinking [back] to six-year-old me who, in this same country, was in a refugee camp, so to grow up to live the American dream [and] to come back to Kenya and shoot for SI in the most beautiful parts of Kenya–I don’t think that’s a story that anybody could make up.”
Using her platform to send messages of love and acceptance to anyone that may feel different, this is just one step she has taken to show women that they can stand together and be celebrated.
Going from strength to strength and having previously been a third of the first ever group Hijab cover for Vogue Arabia, we think Halima is definitely someone to keep an eye on!
