How To Find Your Style

Ditching the fashion rulebook and starting again.

POSTED BY CHARLOTTE MALONEY

It’s easy to get caught up in trends – we’ve all experienced fashion FOMO. But we shouldn’t be slaves to the never-ending cycle and lose ourselves in the process; fashion is a form of SELF-expression! So, with the help of this guide, stop hiding your light under a bushel and get to know your own unique style.

Get Brainstorming

Throughout our lives, we absorb so much visual content – but what really resonates with you? Create a mood board (digitally or by hand) consisting of your favourite aesthetic moments, and don’t limit it to fashion: you can pull concepts from films, music videos, nature, and even architecture. If casting your mind back is proving challenging, you can slowly add to it over a longer period of time, pinning ideas to the corkboard when inspiration strikes. You’ll likely see a particular theme emerging, steering you towards a vibe that feels just right.

Embrace Inconsistency

When experimenting with fashion, we tend to hone in on one specific style. But real authenticity can come from inconsistency: try allowing your mood to influence your outfits. If you wake up feeling confident, why not go for something bold and severely tailored? By contrast, on an introspective day where you’d rather not stand out, opt for neutral tones and a loose-fitting shirt. Conversely, if you’re feeling down in the dumps, try wearing something that suggests the opposite, like a bright yellow sweater, to shake you out of your funk. As long as you’re comfortable, there’s no need to categorise yourself.

Discover your Colors

Ever noticed how the right colour can bring out a certain glow? Finding your colours could be the key to unlocking your full potential. Colour analysis aims to enhance your features by identifying which palette suits you best. You can do a quiz online or hire a professional.

Evaluate your Closet

Set aside some time to go through every item in your closet to determine what you’re actually interested in wearing. I don’t know about you, but I’m still stumbling across things from years ago that I wouldn’t touch with a bargepole these days! – simply because my taste has evolved. While a hodgepodge of options can fuel creativity, don’t hang on to things you don’t even like out of stubbornness.

And there you have it… You’re now equipped to embark on your personal style journey. It might not transform overnight, and it might require some trial and error, but when you do land on a style that works for you, man will i be worth it!
