Furry Friends: Will Fashion for Pets Ever Be a Thing?

We know that humans care about clothes, but will it ever really matter for our pets?

POSTED BY ELSIE FAULKNER

We always think about human beings caring about and talking about all things fashion of course, but what about animals – more specifically – our pets? It may seem a little random or ridiculous, but fashion for pets is a rarely talked about topic, and it’s interesting to discuss whether this could ever really be a thing, and if it actually matters.
It’s not that some owners don’t think about dressing and styling their pets because they do - especially when it comes to dogs, and dog shows/events.

Examples of pet fashion events

In some places, New York is an example, there are even fashion shows and catwalks for dogs. In 2024, the two designers Susan Alexandra and Rachel Antonoff even hosted a dog show in support of rescues while showing off the accessories and clothes of dogs. Other dog shows that do similar things are the NY Pet Fashion Show and the crufty Christmas Dog Fashion Show. So... It’s sort of a thing.

Dressing animals for practicality

What about other dog owners though, and other pet owners generally? Most people don’t dress their pets, except when doing so for practical reasons such as dressing their horses and dogs in ‘coats’ to protect them from harsh weather conditions.

Should we dress our pets or not?

But generally, aside from a cute novelty sweater or a little bandanna here or there, people tend to leave their pets alone.
Is this rightly so? Should we leave pets to be naked and au natural so to speak, or should we dress our animals in the way that us humans do? Does it even really matter? And will acting as our pets’ personal stylists become trendy anytime soon, or is it plain animal cruelty? All of these questions are up for debate, but we do think it’s interesting to discuss. After all, you never know what will end up becoming popular next.
