College essay writing can be one of the most challenging assignments you’ll face as a student, but with the right steps, you’ll be able to compose your paper in no time. Step 1 – Read the Assigned Prompt Carefully

Read the assigned prompt carefully. You should do this no matter what the prompt is asking you. It is important for you to know what your professor expects you to write about. If the professor gives an example of an essay, then read that one and do your best to answer the questions that it raises. A lot of professors also tell students not just what they want them to write about but also how they want them to write it.

Step 2 – Come Up with 3 Topic Ideas

Come up with three topic ideas for your essay. Brainstorm topics by thinking of the following questions: What is an event that you are passionate about? What is something that you have learned recently? What is an opinion on a current event? Once you come up with these questions, ask yourself if they are something that would be interesting to others and make sure they will not be too difficult to research. When selecting one of these topics, make sure it aligns with what your assignment is asking for. For example, if you were asked to write about why being a college student is rewarding then one of your three topic ideas should address this idea.

Step 3 – Choose One Topic

Choose one topic that you are most interested in or familiar with. A common mistake many college students make is choosing an essay topic they are unfamiliar with, because they think it will be easier to write. Choosing a topic that you know well will help provide more information and insight, which will be helpful when writing the essay. Another thing to note as an essay writer is selecting one topic from your list. One way to do this is by putting all of your topics into two groups: topics that interest you versus topics that don't interest you.

Step 4 – Create a Rough Draft

Create a rough draft. Now that you have done your research and decided on the topic, it is time to create a rough draft. The best way to start this is by writing down any ideas that come into your head. Try not to worry about grammar or spelling in this step – it's just for brainstorming purposes. Think about what you want your essay to look like when you are done with it. Is it going to be long or short? What are some different points of view on the topic?

Step 5 – Share Your Draft with a Peer or Professor

Share your draft with an English teacher, friend, family member or professor. They can tell you if there are any errors or inconsistencies in your essay. If they do find any errors, have them point them out so that you can correct them before you submit your final draft. This way, not only will you get feedback on the content of your paper but also on the technical aspects of it. Once someone finds mistakes and tells you what needs to be corrected, then the writer should go back and edit their work accordingly.

Step 6 – Review and Revise Your Work

Review your essay after you have written it, paying special attention to grammar, spelling and word choice. Have someone else review your work.
