Essentials Every Vinyl Collector Needs To Care For Their Collection

Three must-have record accessories to keep you records working for a long time!

POSTED BY ASHLEY COLEMAN

Over the past few years, physical media has made quite a comeback. Especially amongst Gen Z, with many of them showing renewed interest in collecting vinyl records. But, to maintain this type of collection, proper care is key.

Otherwise, your records can significantly decrease in quality or suffer severe damage. Want to ensure your collection stays in optimal condition? Here are a few essentials every vinyl collector needs to maintain their record collection:

Record Storage

Avoid stacking your records horizontally. The accumulation of weight and pressure can cause them to warp over time, leading to audio issues and/or making the vinyl unplayable. Always store your vinyl upright and in a dry, temperature-controlled room for the best protection. Something as simple as a plastic crate or even a space on the bookshelf in your room can work!

Inner and Outer Sleeves

You can also keep your collection in good condition by sleeving your vinyl. Most records come already stored inside of paper sleeves. However, these tend to deteriorate quickly and collect dust, affecting your vinyl's playback. Instead, opt for anti-static inner sleeves– the more durable and dust-free option.

Outer sleeves function similarly to inner sleeves. The only difference is they protect the vinyl jacket instead, keeping it from becoming discolored, scratched, or bent over time.

(Also, avoid any sleeves that have PVC. They can ruin your collection too.)

Record Cleaning Kit

One of the best ways to ensure your vinyl's longevity is by cleaning it, as dust, dirt, and fingerprints accumulate over time. You can individually purchase cleaning items for your records. However, I recommend record cleaning kits to get the most bang for your buck. These kits often come with a record brush, stylus brush, and cleaning solution, all of which will help keep your vinyl in tip-top shape.
