Elon Musk has successfully placed a $44 billion bid on Twitter and is set to make some changes to the social media platform as its new owner. The world’s wealthiest man is hoping to utilise the platform to push his advocation for freedom of speech. Musk has been critical of Twitter’s moderation policies and instances of censorship that the platform has partaken in in the past and so his new plans for the platform come as no surprise.

Musk took to Twitter itself yesterday sharing a quote in which he stated, “Free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vial to the future of humanity are debated”. He continued “I also want to make Twitter better than ever by enhancing the product with new features, making the algorithms open sources to increase trust, defeating the spam bots, and authenticating all humans.”

However, Musk’s plans have not necessarily been well received as the EU and Twitter employees have voiced their concerns over the billionaire’s ideas for moderation. Many of these concerns surround the issues of user protection regarding the moderation of illegal or harmful content that has been known to circulate the site. EU commissioner Thierry Breton has reminded Musk of these regulations stating “Elon, there are rules. You are welcome but these are our rules.”
