Dior Collaborates With Amoako Boafo On Artistic New Collection

Kim Jones wanted to bring Ghanaian artist Amoako Boafo portraits to life in new collection

Dior’s SS21 men’s wear collection that has recently dropped is a collaboration between Dior artistic director Kim Jones and Ghanaian artist Amoako Boafo, and it really is something to behold.

The collection that features experimental patterns and textures, appliqued berets and lace trimmed shirts all incorporate Amoako Boafo’s use of different textures and patterns in his art work, and brightly coloured printed roll-necks incorporate a skilled finger pattern technique that he has used in his portraits for many years.

Kim Jones said of the collaboration “Amoako Boafo’s art touched me profoundly and inspired me for this collection.” With African, and Ghana in particular, being a place that Jones holds very fondly in his heart, the collaboration comes as an homage to African roots for both the artist and artistic director.

As if by fate, Kim Jones explains that they began with the idea of Ivy, inspired by the famous Monsieur Dior dress, and on arriving in Ghana to view Boafo’s work they saw a new portrait of his featuring “A guy in an ivy shirt.” Kim Jones says: “and that was the starting point for the idea of taking the prints and patterns and textures from his work, and turning that into his portraits coming to life.”

The way the new collection has been created, styled and shot does just that. The portraits have been brought to life, with the collection imagery creatively mirroring the original portraits.

The newly re-imagined version of what would have been a show, is instead turned into a digital video can be seen here
