The first trailer for Olivia Newman’s adaptation of Delia Owens’ 2018 novel Where the Crawdads Sing was released on Tuesday and the thrilling teaser give us a glimpse at Normal People’s Daisy Edgar-Jones’ performance as protagonist Kya. The trailer also shows us a look at young Kya who is played by Jojo Regina as the plot follows the protagonist from just the age of six.

The film is set in North Carolina in 1969 and follows Kya, a young woman who has been abandoned by her family and is an outsider to her local community. When football player, Chase Andrews, is found dead, Kya is assumed to be the culprit. The plot interweaves themes of love, family, and crime as we follow Kya from youth into her adulthood where her murder accusation coincides with the beginnings of her romantic relationship with Tate Walker (Taylor John Smith).

The trailer was not the only exciting announcement surrounding the film this week as Taylor Swift also took to Instagram to announce that her new song ‘Carolina’ will be featured in the film. While Swift teased fans by not announcing when they will hear the full track, she did inform her followers that a clip from the song was featured in the trailer and that she “wanted to create something haunting and ethereal to match this mesmerizing story.”
