Cynthia Nixon Narrates Chilling Viral Video About Conflicting Standards And Mixed Messages Women Face Today
Be a lady, they said.
Girls.Girls.Girls. Magazine dropped the biggest and most necessary bomb so far this year. Bold statement, but hear me out. The short film was produced by the magazine’s founder and is fronted by Cynthia Nixon, who recites the chilling words written by Camille Rainville from a blog post titled “Be a lady, they said".
In a few short days the video has been viewed over 3 million times, with more shares on social media than we have seen in a very long time.
The Sex and The City actress and activist delivers the powerful message, highlighting the conflicting views, standards and opinions females are bombarded with on a daily basis. It throws shade to body shaming from the media, ambiguous appearance ideals and victim blaming.
The film begins with Nixon alone, staring directly into the camera, “Be a lady, they said. Your skirt is too short. Your shirt is too low. Don’t show so much skin. Cover up. Leave something to the imagination.” A range of fashion, film and news clips are played along side Nixon’s words.
‘Be A Lady, They Said’ is a rare piece of content that will physically stop people in their tracks. Nixon has expressed her feelings toward the video via her instagram ‘Proud to be involved with this powerful film that has struck a chord with so many people around the world’.
