I used to be a strictly gold girl. You know the type – gold hoops, gold chain, gold rings, full stop. Whenever I wore silver, I felt like I was cheating. I would see other women wearing layered gold and silver jewelry and would think, “wow that looks so good on them, but it’s not something I could ever pull off.” Fast forward to now, and I’ve uncovered the mixed metals formula that works for everyone – the formula that makes you look in the mirror and think oh, this is a look.

First things first: start small. There’s no need to throw on every piece of jewelry you own. Begin with your staples – think dainty layed silver and gold necklaces. A personal fav of mine is wearing gold and silver hoops together. Mixing silver and gold earrings together is an easy way to get started. Whatever you start with, it should feel intentional, not chaotic. When in doubt, use your preferred metal as the main character, and let the other support it with one or two pieces.

Layering is the key to making this a look. I like to combine my thicker gold chains with long dainty silver pennants, or my silver charm choker with dainty gold layered chains. Now you’re not only mixing metals, you’re mixing texture and adding depth. The same rule applies to rings: stack different tones on the same hand instead of separating them. Trust me, it looks cooler when everything mingles.

Your outfit matters too. Mixed metals thrive against neutral basis so they can have the spotlight. I let my jewelry be the statement, instead of competing with bold prints. And whatever you do, don’t forget your hardware: silver belt buckles with gold jewelry? Elite. Gold bag chains with silver earrings? Even better.
