Creative Ways To Wear Band Tees (That Aren't Just Jeans)

The band tee. An item that many people—non-band lovers included—have owned at some point. I remember being a teenager sporting a H&M Nirvana shirt, with no real interest in the music but completely drawn in by the cool factor.

The most common way to wear a band tee, naturally, is with jeans. I picture mom jeans with a flannel tied around the waist and maybe a cap. This kind of look was everywhere in the 2010s, but recently I've been thinking about how it could be updated for the 2020s.

It was seeing a woman on the street that caught my attention. She wore a cropped grey and red band tee with a red lace asymmetrical midi skirt. I know these flowing asymmetrical skirts are trendy at the moment, but I never would have thought to pair something so feminine with something traditionally grungy like a band tee. I was inspired.

I took my favorite The Script T-shirt out of my wardrobe and started experimenting with ways to style it in a more modern way. I tried it with a leather miniskirt, a silk midi skirt, and what became my favorite combination: layered over a spaghetti strap minidress.

What I love about band tees is that they don't have to belong to one specific aesthetic. They can be grunge, feminine, edgy, playful, or even surprisingly elegant depending on what you pair them with. Sometimes the most interesting outfits come from mixing pieces that don't seem like they should work together.
