Cool-Girl Cassyette Tells Us What It’s Like To Be A Woman On The Alt Rock Scene

‘Jean’ is out now

POSTED BY ROWAN FOY

The new it-girl on the alt-rock scene, cool-girl Cassyette is making moves with her first single, ‘Jean’. Her Spotify bio says ‘if Vince Neil from the Motley crew had impregnated Dolly Parton’ then Cassyette would be the result. She certainly channels a Dolly Parton vibe in her image, but her music is much fiercer and her own identity shines through in her lyrics. Cassyette is fearless in both her music and her vibe. We talked to her about the importance of both and how it feels to be a woman on the alt-rock scene.

Who would you say are your music influences?

I love bands like Bring Me The Horizon, Royal Blood and The Amazons. I also love Lorde, Haim and Grime. That’s just a few of my favorite modern-day artists. I am influenced by so many different artists, bands and songs. Some of my other throwback influences would be Joan Jett and the black hearts, Motley Crew, Nirvana, Allanah Miles and Heart. There are seriously too many to name.

What message is your music trying to convey?

For me, my music is very personal. I talk about a lot of different stuff in my songs. I know a lot of people say I’m a complete emo after they hear my lyrics and it’s true lol. Writing music is a way for me to channel my thoughts and the experiences I have gone through. I have hyper functioning anxiety and ADD so writing music really helps me escape, especially from my point of view as someone who has always suffered from mental health issues.

I guess I am sharing with the world a piece of my heart and my story in the hope that people will be able to relate. I know there are so many people out there who are feeling the same way and don’t feel heard or understood. So, this is for all of them! I want people to be able to listen to my music and feel some sort of relief, so when they turn it up they can really let their hair down, let go of their demons and rock out.

How does it feel to have your first single, ‘Jean’, out?

It’s so exciting! So cool! I’m so fucking gassed!!

What can we expect from your upcoming EP?

Rawness, realness and rock n roll!

What is it like to be a woman in the alt-rock scene?

It’s awesome. It’s feeling a lot less like it’s just a man’s world these days! There has been a real positive shift since guitar music has started making its way back to the top recently! There are so many insane female fronted bands on the rise at the moment and it’s a great time to be in this scene.

Was it a conscious decision to have an all-female band, and if so, why?

Actually no, most of the girls were good mates of mine before so it happened naturally. Then we watched Jem and the Holograms because we were so into it! Then we found Issy.

How important would you say it is for women to control their own image in the music industry?

Everyone should have full control of their image! Do what you want! Never let anyone dictate how you should be, it only puts you in a box and you will never reach your full potential if you’re not 100% your authentic self.

Do you think fashion is an important addition to the whole vibe of your music?

I love fashion, it is definitely something I like to add into the mix! The music has always been the most important thing for me though. I am lucky to have a lot of very creative friends in fashion who I love to collaborate with. It’s really cool that we can bring ideas together and make awesome visuals to go with the music.

How have you found the experience of breaking into the music industry?

I try not to think about it too much because I can become quite stressful if you let it. I am just living in the moment and enjoying making music to share with the people. I absolutely love everyone who has been listening to the song and sharing it! That’s so awesome to see as an independent artist because it really helps get the word out. I had two people fly over from Germany to watch me in the Barns Courtney support show! That was insane they had done that just to see me! It made me even more passionate to just go for it!

Where can we expect to see you performing in the future?

I’m playing at Great Escape next week and I have a few secret shows in the pipeline too... so keep an eye out!
