We Interview Glasgow Based Music Artist Pearling

Learn about her music, her style, and what she has been working on.

POSTED BY SOPHIE CLARK

Pearling is a unique voice in the electronic scene, she brings a history of playing with bands since she was a teenager and an approach to music untinted by formal learning. Her talent is seen in full clarity when you find out she is entirely self taught, taking advantage of the pandemic lockdown to find a beautiful way to share her art.

She told us that once she decided to start making music it just kept flowing out of her, making her early music a little uncoordinated but refreshing in its free flowing nature.

Last May she released her favorite single to date, Kiera. The song gives such a raw look at a feeling we all experience, yet one that is so seldom explored in song. The song was written about her younger sister, her experiences of wanting nothing more to protect a person from everything but not being able to. She told us that it wasn't until well into the writing process that she realized who the song was for or what was inspiring her.

With her recent album she was aiming for a more cohesive feel. Of course she succeeded. The album flows so naturally, it's clearly well planned. While we discussed how she creates her albums she shared how she finds it hard to relinquish control, not trusting anyone to actualize her vision as well as she can.

The vision doesn't stop with her music. Pearling is a persona, a character, an image to be upheld.

When it comes to image, Pearling sighted The White Stripes as an inspiration. Not in their style but instead in their ability to stick to such a specific aesthetic whenever they were in the public eye. This is not just for keeping up a style(even if she does it seamlessly), it also allows a separation between the person and the artist.

Her onstage look is incomparable. She described it as ghostlike when asked. Her style consists of layers upon layers, almost all white, and -as she told us- heavily altered by her. All together her style strikes the perfect balance between erie and angelic.

A major component of her style is her hair. It's the length of her back and completely black and silver, undeniably striking and has had us obsessed with her style for years. She told us it wasn't something she planned in advance but agrees that it's perfect for her.

We think her look is so cool, her music is even cooler, and we can't wait to see what she does next.
