Why Is Everyone's Style Suddenly Chinese?

Traditional details are getting a modern fashion makeover.

Nowadays, it feels like every clothing shop I walk into is following one common theme: Chinese-inspired fashion. I’m seeing mandarin collars and frog button closures on everything from tops to jackets to dresses, and it has definitely caught my attention.

Being half Chinese myself, I’ve seen more than my fair share of these garments while visiting China, although it initially felt a little strange to see such traditional-looking elements being reimagined as casual streetwear in other countries.

I own a couple of tops with these details as a fun way to celebrate my Asian side, so I’m actually happy to see them becoming more accessible. And honestly? A mandarin collar top is one of those pieces that feels surprisingly easy to style. The structured neckline instantly makes an outfit feel more polished, whether it’s paired with jeans for a casual look or dressed up with a skirt.

While these details have become a fashion trend recently, they are far from new. Elements like mandarin collars and frog closures have been part of Chinese clothing traditions for generations, so seeing them translated into modern silhouettes has been fascinating to watch.

I think part of the appeal is that these details add something a little different to everyday clothing. After years of minimal basics dominating fashion, it feels like people are craving pieces with more personality, texture, and history. A simple jacket becomes more interesting when it has an unexpected closure, and a basic top feels elevated when the neckline has a distinctive shape.

I’ve also noticed an influx of military-inspired jackets in stores recently, so the popularity of frog button closures feels like a natural extension of that trend. It seems fashion is moving toward more structure and ornamentation, and I can’t say I’m mad about it.

Of course, wearing traditional-inspired fashion as someone connected to that culture feels slightly different than simply appreciating the aesthetic. I love seeing elements of my heritage represented in fashion, but I also think it’s important to recognize the history behind the details that designers are borrowing from.

Ultimately, I think fashion is at its best when it creates these little moments of connection. A garment can be beautiful, stylish, and personal all at once.
