Chanel Takes Us On A Virtual Journey With Its First-Ever Digital Collection For Cruise 2021
And this time, we’re all invited.
Originally scheduled to take place on the idyllic, Italian island of Capri, the luxury French fashion house was left with no other option than to take its Cruise 2021 show online amidst the COVID-19 global pandemic. Though not quite the same, yet still as elegant as could possibly be, Virginie Vard had no problem in bringing the Mediterranean coastline to the Rue Cambon studio in Paris. Lit by a serene pastel sunset- think golden light, pebbled beaches, and that blissful summer breeze we all just happen to be dreaming of.
Inspired by the allure and charm of “the legendary actresses” of the 60s when they would escape to the Italian and the French Riviera, Viard wanted to create a show that was elegant and sophisticated, whilst also channeling an element of simplicity. Responding to a time where sustainability is at the forefront of fashion, she revealed to WWD how the team managed to cope with working during lockdown following compromised supply chains and the sudden reopening of factories.

“We reused everything we had; all the leftover buttons and thread. We made the knits with yarns we had in stock. That saved us time," explained Viard, who also remarked how they featured staple pieces from previous collections. Designed to be ‘a wardrobe that can be carried in a little suitcase on wheels, a shopper and an embroidered handbag,’ the collection features a variety of versatile, easy-to-wear, and day-into-night pieces. Bikini tops are layered under cardigan jackets, knitted two-pieces are accessorized with jeweled belts, tweed comes unlined for fluidity and of course, pink comes in every shade.
